Alfa Romeo Milano Prototype Spied During Police Stop

Alfa Romeo Milano Prototype Spied During Police Stop 09.30.2009

Essentially a replacement for the aging 147, the Milano features modern MiTo-inspired

styling underneath all that camouflage. Since the car was already unmasked by

several cell phone pictures, taken at an Alfa Romeo factory, the new images

don't provide a lot of additional details.

Alfa Romeo Milano Prototype Spied During Police Stop 09.30.2009

As we have previously reported, the Milano will feature a wide variety of petrol

and diesel engines. While nothing is official, engine options are expected to

include a 1.4-liter four-cylinder petrol (with 120-160 hp) and a range-topping

1.75-liter four-cylinder petrol with around 200 hp.

Hyundai Launches Stretch Edition of Its Luxury Flagship, EQUUS

Hyundai EQUUS Limousine 1.jpg

Hyundai Motor Co. today began receiving orders for the long wheelbase edition of its most luxurious car, the EQUUS.

The stretch edition offers several upgraded features from the normal sedan version, including differentiated exterior designs and longer overall length. The engine and other functions have been reinforced to attain first-class performance, safety, comfort and convenience.

With the comfort of passengers at the forefront of its design principle, the Hyundai EQUUS Limousine, as it is named in Korea, offers passengers unparalleled levels of interior volume. The vehicle's length is longer than major competitors by as much as 310 mm, with backseat legroom as much as 376 mm longer, as well.

To differentiate it from the EQUUS sedan, the stretch version is equipped with an exclusive horizontal cross-bar radiator grille with an emblem in the center. Thus, the exterior image exudes an impression of strength and confidence, in line with the vehicle's elegant image.

Hyundai EQUUS Limousine 2.jpg

Hyundai EQUUS Limousine comes with a choice of two sophisticated engines: The Lambda 3.8L engine and the Tau 5.0L engine. The Tau 5.0 engine, applied to the stretch version for the first time, is a reinforced version of the Tau 4.6L engine that won the 2009 Ward's 10 Best Engines award.

With a maximum output of 400ps and a peak torque rating of 51.0kg, the Hyundai EQUUS Limousine outperforms its competitors, such as the Lexus LS460L and Mercedes S500L by 20ps and 12ps, respectively.

Additionally, Hyundai has successfully developed a bulletproof version of the long wheelbase EQUUS and has donated three units to the Blue House (the Korean Presidential Residence). Hyundai is the first Korean company ? and one of a handful worldwide - to develop a bulletproof car with its own technology.

Tokyo Motor Show: Mazda Shows Off Updated Kiyora Concept

Hyundai is the latest carmaker to bail on the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, but it's far from the first, raising concerns over the show's future. Mazda is undeterred, however, today revealing a range of new engines and an updated version of the 2008 Kiyora concept that it will have on display.

The Kiyora Concept is a compact, eco-friendly hatch-type car that Mazda imagines as a fun-to-drive yet responsible runabout powered by the new SKY-G 1.3-liter gasoline engine revealed earlier today. Power is sent to the wheels by the six-speed SKY-Drive automatic transmission.

Fuel economy is estimated at 75 mpg in Japan's combined 10-15 mode test cycle. It gets there thanks in part to Mazda's i-stop system, which shuts the engine off at stops. The Kiyora also uses regenerative braking, presumably to operate the car's electronics, and weight savings and aerodynamics also play a role in the car's efficiency.

2009 Mazda Kiyora Concept Update

Even with a reduced set of manufacturers, the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show may still prove to be an interesting display of technology, as carmakers continue to push forward with increasingly "greener" powertrains and designs.

The 41st Tokyo Motor Show runs October 23-November 4, 2009, with press days starting October 21.

SUBARU HYBRID TOURER CONCEPT

1. Concept
Subaru has condensed its DNA, developed over many years around the Subaru's core technology of "Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD)" and "Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine", into the integration of a luxurious and high-quality cabin atmosphere and an eye-catching sculpted body. The concept car features Subaru's latest evolutions in handling agility, riding comfort and superior safety performance. It proposes Subaru's vision of a future grand touring car that excels in environmental friendliness thanks to Subaru's unique hybrid system.

2. Design and packaging

(1) Exterior
Subaru imagined wings with a feeling of freedom and confidence for driving far and wide in any environment. A luxurious and comfortable cabin, and advanced driving performance are contained within a sculpted aerodynamic form. The design features a combination of bright, open glass areas with a solid, reliable body.

(2) Interior
The original point of the ideal grand touring car is its interior design, featuring four independent and comfortably positioned seats. Passengers are enclosed within an atmosphere that provides a surpassing feeling of openness and stress-free reassurance, through the further pursuit of a human-centered philosophy, the essence of Subaru car design, and the incorporation of functions that are friendly to passengers.
The top of the dashboard is movable up and down to provide an optimal driving environment for the driver according to driving conditions.
A flat floor in the rear seat was achieved even with the implementation of AWD, for improved use and movement inside the cabin.
Specialized shielding is incorporated in the windshield to reduce eyestrain on the driver.
New leather covering developed with superior breathability and a ventilation function is used in the seats for improved comfort and texture.

3. Mechanisms
In addition to refinements to Subaru's core technology such as Symmetrical AWD and Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine, further enhancements were made for improved environmental friendliness, driving performance and high safety performance by offering a next-generation power unit system and advanced safety technologies.
(1) Next-generation power unit system
2.0-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline engine
The Horizontally-Opposed turbo gasoline engine, with a reputation for powerful acceleration, is combined with a direct fuel-injection system for improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, and improved torque and response in practical range. This evolution in Subaru turbo technology excels in both environmental friendliness and engine performance.

Lineartronic (CVT)
Lineartronic, Subaru's new generation automatic transmission, achieves further improvements in both fuel efficiency and driving performance by reinforcing parts for use with the high-power output of a turbo engine.

Hybrid system
To further enhance the appeal of the Symmetrical AWD system, this unique hybrid two-motor system features a power/drive motor in the front and a drive motor in the rear.

* At start-up and extremely low speeds when fuel efficiency is low, such as when driving the car into a garage, the rear motor is used primarily to allow driving without utilizing the power of the engine.
* During normal driving, the front engine is primarily used. The direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline mated with the Symmetrical AWD offers a whole new, Subaru driving experience.
* During acceleration, the rear motor assists the driving power of the engine to achieve advanced driving performance.
* Further, when accelerating uphill, the front motor, which is normally used as a power generator, assists to drive the front axle for improved performance.
* The implementation of a non-idling function that stops the engine when the car comes to a halt reduces unnecessary fuel consumption.
* The use of a high-performance lithium battery is based on experience and know-how achieved with the Subaru Plug-in STELLA electric vehicle, launched this summer. This includes the use of a precise energy management system and regenerative brake controls, for improvements in excellent fuel efficiency.

STARTECH Range Rover

World Debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show IAA 2009

Until now the STARTECH brand stood globally as a synonym for exclusive tuning for the automobiles from Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. With the world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show IAA 2009 STARTECH expands its portfolio with a sophisticated customization program for Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover automobiles.

All STARTECH products are designed and manufactured in accordance with the strict quality guidelines of the ISO 9001 norm, and all are tested and approved by the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÃœV).

The STARTECH product lineup for all makes of vehicles comprises the entire palette of professional tuning: Elegant and efficient aerodynamic-enhancement components as well as custom-tailored one-piece or multi-piece STARTECH Monostar light-alloy wheels characterize the outfit of a Jaguar, Land Rover, Range Rover, Jeep, Dodge or Chrysler refined by STARTECH.

To further improve active safety the STARTECH engineers have developed markedly comfortable sport suspensions and lowering kits. They offer more agile handling and easier controllability of the vehicle in extreme situations.

Special emphasis of the STARTECH activities lies on customizing and upgrading the interior. Exclusive accessories such as ergonomically shaped sport steering wheels, polished stainless-steel scuff plates with illuminated STARTECH logo or classy interior completion sets are part of the product lineup as are custom fully leather interiors crafted from especially soft, breathable and yet highly durable leather and Alcantara. Another specialty are exclusive wood inlays that can be manufactured in any desired color using special bleaching and staining techniques. Genuine carbon-fiber trim sets are also available in numerous variations for all models.

STARTECH also offers custom-tailored multimedia systems for all models.

STARTECH Range Rover

STARTECH Makes the Range Rover Even More Exclusive

Owners of Range Rover vehicles are highly discriminating automotive connoisseurs. They can now find the perfect solutions for customizing their vehicles at STARTECH.

With stylishly integrated LED daytime running lights STARTECH lends the Range Rover an even more striking appearance and further improved active safety. The light inserts come in the same color as the door handles and the front grille, eliminating the need for costly painting.

The new STARTECH Monostar IV light-alloy wheels are another eye catcher. The five-spoke wheels feature a beautiful combination of grey and polished surfaces with a matte lacquer finish. The size 10Jx22 wheels are mounted with high-performance tires in size 295/35 R 22 front and back.

Immediately noticeable in the rear are the dual trapezoidal stainless-steel exhaust tips, which were developed to add some more visual pizzazz to the stock exhaust system.

The STARTECH designers demonstrated their ingenuity in the interior as well. Leather door panels on all four doors in the same color as the production leather complete the leather interior. Special contrast-colored cords create a particularly customized look.

The company upholstery shop fulfills requests for even more customization with entire interiors crafted in any color, upholstery design and from any material imaginable, including exclusive precious wood. Innovative bleaching and staining techniques allow the creation of perfectly matched or stunningly contrasted wood colors with various surface finishes.

The choices are virtually unlimited: The product lineup ranges from an upgrade for the stock wood trim in the form of a precious-wood molding for the center console to complete trim sets made from any desired wood grain or from genuine carbon fiber.

Upon customer request STARTECH transforms the Range Rover into an exclusive office on wheels or into a mobile multimedia lounge with state-of-the-art communication technology.

The development of the STARTECH program for the updated Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles of model year 2010 is already running at full steam. It will include a sporty yet elegant aerodynamic-enhancement kit, custom-tailored 22-inch wheels, suspension modifications and exclusive interiors with fully leather and Alcantara upholsteries and precious-wood inlays in any color and grain, all made exactly to customer's specifications.

The face of the English SUV receives more character with the sporty yet elegant STARTECH front element with integrated LED daytime running lights. The new front element was designed to attach to the lower part of the production bumper.

The STARTECH attachment for the liftgate continues the contour of the rear bumper across its entire width. The result is an even more balanced rear appearance of the Freelander 2 compared with the production car.

The fully stainless-steel STARTECH sport exhaust system with chrome-plated tailpipes left and right adds yet another visual and acoustic highlight. Custom-tailored versions of the exhaust system are available for all Freelander 2 models.

STARTECH Monostar IV light-alloy wheels give the Freelander 2 an even more refined appearance and increase both driving fun and safety reserves. The one-piece five-spoke wheels in size 9Jx20 are mounted with size 265/45 R 20 tires front and back and make full use of the available space under the wheel arches.

The STARTECH program also offers a multitude of customization options for the interior of the smallest Land Rover model: The company upholstery shop can answer the exclusive requests of any Freelander 2 owner, perfect down to the last detail. The upholsterers masterfully handcraft interiors in any color and upholstery design imaginable. Germany’s E-Wolf Targets Ferrari With New Electric Supercar

E-Wolf E2 concept rendering

It seems these days that a new electric sports car concept is announced almost every month but it's not often that we get to see the actual concept in the metal, so to speak, or in the case of the new E1, in the carbon-fiber composite. The E1 electric roadster is the latest creation of German firm E-Wolf and it is just one of two new electric vehicles from the company, with the latter vehicle set to compete with the likes of Ferrari in the performance arena.

E-Wolf E1 electric roadster

Working in partnership with the Saxony Lightweight Center and the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Polymer Technology at the Technical University of Dresden, E-Wolf unveiled its street-legal E1 roadster at the recent 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show and plans to add the E2 supercar to its lineup in about two years.

The key to the cars’ performance is a light weight structure. In the case of the E1, the entire chassis weighs in at just 1,102-pounds but this comes at a cost as the vehicle can only accommodate drivers weighing up to 150-pounds.

E-Wolf E1 electric roadster

Power comes from a 150-horsepower AC induction motor with 185-pound-feet of torque. This is enough to propel the E1 from 0-62 mph in less than five seconds and see it reach a top speed of 143 mph. An array of lithium-ion batteries will see the E1 drive up to 200-miles on a single charge.

While the E1 can be bought today at a price of €150,000 (approximately $218,818), E-Wolf is also working on an E2 supercar due in 2011.

E-Wolf E2 concept rendering

The E2 will feature four electric motors, one in each wheel, delivering a combined output of 544-horsepower and 737-pound-feet of torque--All this in a chassis that is expected to weigh around 2,000-pounds.

So far the E2 only exists in computer-generated rendering form but its designers promise the car will be able to reach a top speed of 155 mph. Hopefully the production version will stay true to the concept’s lines.

Mitsuoka to offer unique rental cars in Japan and China

Mitsuoka, the Japanese car company whose mission seems to be hoarding all the ugly in the entire world and using it to design automobiles, will expand into Japan's rental car market and offer its luxury range in China. Japanese drivers will be able to rent the Orochi for ¥25,000 ($279 US) from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., or for three whole days for ¥45,000 ($501 US). They can also sport the Himiko for ¥20,000 ($223 US) for those nine hours, or ¥36,000 ($401 US) for 72 hours.

The sea monster-faced Orochi will also spearhead Mitsuoka's charge into China. The company plans to display the car at next year's Beijing Auto Show, and to open dealerships in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. We know the Chinese have occasionally fascinating taste in car design, but we can't wait to see how they receive the Orochi. Mitsuoka wants to move 35 units in its first year, and as if its looks weren't queer enough, the car is expected to cost 50% more in China than it does in Japan, where it will already set you back ¥9,345,000 ($87,287 USD). Any takers?

MAZDA, BP DEBUT ADVANCED BIOFUEL AT PETIT LE MANS RACE

Dyson Racing's No. 16 Mazda-powered Lola LMP2 coupe is running a blend of
ethanol and biobutanol at Road Atlanta. It will not be classified in the race.

In the ongoing rolling technology showcase that is the American Le Mans Series,
MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development, Dyson Racing and their primary Series
sponsor and technical partner, BP, will fuel one of their Mazda MZR-R-powered
Lola coupe racecars with a fuel combining both ethanol and biobutanol - an
advanced biofuel that BP is developing with its partner DuPont – in the 12th
annual Petit Le Mans powered by MAZDA6.

"This weekend's debut of an ethanol and biobutanol blend in our American Le Mans
Series race car is the perfect example of the technical relationship between
Mazda and BP," said Robert Davis, Senior Vice President, Product Development and
Quality for Mazda North American Operations, and the man responsible for the
company's North American motorsport programs under the MAZDASPEED Motorsports
Development banner. "Advanced biofuels such as biobutanol, along with the choice
to use a production-derived 2.0-liter turbocharged MZR-R engine, shows the
commitment that both Mazda and BP have to bringing clean, efficient,
environmentally sensitive technologies to motorsports, and using motorsports to
improve those products before we offer them for sale to the general public."

In order to continue development of the advanced biofuel in a racing
environment, Dyson Racing will run one of its cars using the standard
Series-approved fuel (car 20), and the other (car 16) on biobutanol. Through
open and ongoing discussion between Mazda, American Le Mans Series technical
personnel and other participating teams the gasoline, ethanol and biobutanol-blend-fueled
car (car 16) will not participate for Series points during the Petit Le Mans
weekend.

BP is a leading energy company with significant investments in advanced biofuels.
It is looking for opportunities in biofuels that make both a contribution to
energy security and a material reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared
with conventional fuels. BP is committed to using economically and
environmentally sustainable feedstocks and is developing new technologies to
make good biofuels even better. Participation in American Le Mans Series
competition offers BP a unique opportunity to produce new fuels and biofuel
components, as well as demonstrate the performance of these fuels.

Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the
sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the
United States, Canada and Mexico through more than 850 dealers. Operations in
Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in
Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

Biobutanol facts:

• Biobutanol shares many of the environmental advantages of ethanol and has
additional benefits, including:

• Blends into gasoline at higher concentrations than ethanol without the need to
modify vehicles.

• Offers excellent fuel economy that is close to that of gasoline.

• Can be used alongside ethanol to help improve the performance of
ethanol/gasoline blends.

• Can be used in existing gasoline (petrol) supply and distribution channels,
eliminating the need for expensive infrastructure investments.

Production:

• Can utilize a variety of conventional feedstocks (such as sugar cane, corn,
wheat and sorghum), supporting global implementation.

• In future, biobutanol can be produced from cellulosic feedstocks, including
fast-growing energy crops (e.g. energy grasses) or agricultural by-products
(e.g. corn stalks).

Environmental Benefits:

• Initial indications are that, on the same feedstock basis, biobutanol delivers
emission reductions that are at least as good as ethanol.

• Biobutanol's low vapour pressure (lower than gasoline), means that vapor
pressure specifications do not need to be compromised leading to higher VOC
emissions.

The 12th annual Petit Le Mans powered by MAZDA6 on Saturday, September 26 is the
American Le Mans Series' cornerstone event at Road Atlanta in Braselton Ga. The
green flag for the 1,000-mile/10-hour endurance classic is scheduled for 11:15
a.m. ET with SPEED airing live television coverage starting at 11 a.m. ET ...
rain or shine! American Le Mans Radio presented by Porsche and Living Timing &
Scoring will be available on Racehub at americanlemans.com. Live coverage also
can be heard on Sirius 126 and XM 242. You can follow the Series on Twitter (almsnotes)

Latest Spy Shots: BMW X5 Facelift

2010 BMW X5 Facelift spy photos

This round of photographs show the vehicle only has modest changes compared to
the one spied earlier in the month. However, we do see a difference in the
tailpipes, which are now trapezoidal instead of oval. Also, wider, shorter side
view mirrors appear to be present on this model. Roof rails do not appear on
this version, unlike the previous prototype. The wider shots of the X5's
front-end show the best angle yet of the new headlights.

Video: 2010 Toyota 4Runner

2010 Toyota 4Runner Add to Rich Heritage With More Power, Better MPG

TORRANCE, Calif. (September 24, 2009) When the first Toyota 4Runner sport

utility vehicle (SUV) was launched back in 1984 it was a revolutionary new

vehicle based on the mechanics of the four-wheel-drive Toyota pickup truck. The

4Runner combined the versatility and go-anywhere ability of four-wheel-drive

with the comfort and utility found in passenger cars.

Twenty-five years, four generations and more than 1.5 million sales later, the

4Runner continues to evolve while remaining close to its roots. The all-new

fifth-generation 4Runner is even more rugged and athletic, and packed with more

power and better mileage. A completely redesigned interior and unique cargo area

make the newest 4Runner smarter, more comfortable, and more versatile than ever.

"Backed by a quarter-century of heritage combined with the integration of the

latest comfort, convenience and performance technologies, the all-new

fifth-generation 4Runner has evolved into one of the most advanced mid-sized

truck-based SUV's on the market while at the same time staying true to its roots

as a rugged and durable off-roader," said Bob Carter, group vice president and

general manager of Toyota Division.

More rugged than the Highlander and more versatile than the FJ Cruiser, the

4Runner combines the toughness and durability of body-on-frame construction with

multi-use design that excels at a wide variety of tasks.

The newest 4Runner is taller, wider and longer for 2010, and is available in a

variety of configurations. It will be offered in three models, top-of-the-line

Limited, a well-equipped SR5, plus a Trail grade for those who require maximum

off-road capability.

Drivetrain configurations include rear wheel 4x2, part-time 4x4 and full-time

multi-mode 4x4 with a locking center differential. All 4x4 models are equipped

with a 4.0-liter V6 mated to a five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission. The 4x2

models will be equipped with either a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a

four-speed ECT automatic or the 4.0-liter V6 with the five-speed ECT-i

automatic. Optional third-row seats allow for up to seven-person capacity.

2010 Toyota 4Runner SR5

Exterior Styling

The design strategy for the new 4Runner emphasizes a more rugged, powerful

stance. Large diameter wheels and tires were added to not only improve off-road

performance, but also enhance the 4Runner's truck-based characteristics. In

addition to its styling emphasis on ruggedness and outdoor adventure, the new

design utilizes a combination of Toyota's classic boxy form and progressive

styling.

All 4Runner grades feature rugged new bumpers and wider shoulders, with newly

designed head- lamp and tail-light systems, which offer a newly-minted,

technical design quality and better nighttime performance. The front ends square

fender flares meld with a muscular profile that links with a beefy and square

rear bumper and back door.

Aluminum alloy wheels are 17-inches in diameter on SR5 and Trail grades and

20-inches on the Limited, and include a full size spare.

In addition to its distinctive front grille, the SR5 grade also adopts

overfenders and mud guards to help tackle inclement weather and off-road

conditions. A roof rack comes standard for hauling equipment for outdoor

activities.

The Trail grade is designed to maximize off-road performance with a superior

approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and an array of functional

upgrades for the most demanding active outdoor enthusiast. It can be

distinguished by a unique hood scoop, unique 17-inch wheels, black outer

mirrors, front and rear bumper guards and dark smoke treatment on the head and

tail lamps.

The Limited and SR5 grades add to the muscular design with special touches that

provide a premium appearance. The front end includes a chrome-plated front

grille insert, fog lamp bezel and front bumper molding. Front and rear

overfenders and side skirts are color-keyed. Chrome plating is also found on the

side molding, roof rack and rear bumper.

Turn signals on SR5 and Limited V6 grades are now incorporated into the outside

mirrors, along with puddle lamps.

4Runner is available in six exterior colors. Three new colors, Shoreline Blue

Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic and Classic Silver Metallic, join carryovers

Blizzard Pearl, Salsa Red Pearl and Black.

New Engine Choices

The 2010 4Runner is powered by a new 4.0-liter V6, which now generates 270

horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. Through the use of advanced engine

management that includes dual independent Variable Valve Timing with

intelligence (VVT-i), the new 4.0-liter engine offers the best of both worlds,

adding more power while improving efficiency. For 2010, the new V6 engine

produces 34 horsepower more than the prior V6, and 10 horsepower more than the

optional V8 of the previous generation.

Additional mileage improvements have come from careful attention to wind flow,

reducing aerodynamic drag to a Cd of 0.365. EPA-estimated mileage improves from

16 city and 21 highway to 17 city/23 highway for the 4x2, and from 16 city and

20 highway to 17 city/22 highway for 4x4 models. Both achieve an EPA-estimated

19 mpg combined, an improvement of more than five percent. With the new

4.0-liter engine, maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.

In addition to the upgraded V6 engine, a proven 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine

with VVT-i is available on the 4x2 SR5 model. The gutsy DOHC, 16-valve 2.7 makes

157 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a four-speed automatic

transmission with 2.80:1 first gear and 0.753 overdrive 4th, the 2.7 delivers 18

city/23 highway mpg.

2010 Toyota 4Runner Trail

4x4 Capability Designed-In

To build on its tradition of rugged body-on-frame construction, the newest

4Runner shares the same platform as the FJ Cruiser. Extensive frame and body

reinforcements have been added, using high-tensile materials to add strength

without adding weight. SR5 and Trail 4x4 models have a two-speed lever-operated,

part-time system with neutral position, while the 4Runner Limited is equipped

with full-time, four-wheel-drive with a locking center differential and employs

a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The new 4Runner is also equipped

with a stronger rear differential over the previous model, thanks to a gear ring

that has increased in size from 7.87 to 8.18 inches.

To enhance grip, the A-TRAC system is now standard equipment on all 4x4 models.

The system can distribute driving force to any one wheel in contact with the

ground, making terrain irregularities and slippery patches transparent to the

driver. An electronic-locking rear differential is standard on the Trail grade.

Axles house 3.73 gears, or 4.56:1 with the 2.7-liter engine and the differential

housings have improved seals for better resistance to mud and water.

An array of advanced features, formerly only available in the Land Cruiser,

further boosts off-highway capabilities. The Trail grade offers Toyota's Kinetic

Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) as an option. KDSS radically improves

terrain-following ability by disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more

axle travel, and better suspension articulation in slow, difficult terrain.

Toyota's Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade. CRAWL is

an adjustable electro-mechanical system that can be tuned to match the terrain

by selecting any of five speed levels. The system maintains an appropriate speed

that keeps the vehicle under control and minimizes the load on drivetrain and

suspension components. The CRAWL feature helps make traversing difficult terrain

easier and safer. With the transfer case shifted into low range, Crawl Control

regulates engine speed and output (along with braking force), to propel the

vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five low-speed settings. This allows

the driver to maintain focus while steering over very rough level ground or

steep grades, without having to also modulate the throttle, or brake, pedals.

The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system which allows the 4x4

operator to dial in wheel slip control to match the terrain. In loose terrain

such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing

wheel-spin to work in the vehicle's favor. On bumpy moguls, or solid rock, wheel

slip is minimized and the system acts more like a limited slip. The Mogul

setting is for any extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and

ridges, uphill or down.

All 4Runner 4x4 models are standard-equipped with Downhill Assist Control (DAC),

which is designed to augment the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by

holding the vehicle to a target speed with no driver intervention. All V6

4Runner models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which

provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle

stationary while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

On-Road Driving Dynamics

The new 4Runner may be a truck-based SUV, but it offers the kind of drivability

and riding comfort more often associated with car-based platforms.

Coil springs over gas shocks are used at all four corners for a comfortable ride

and controlled handling. A double-wishbone independent front suspension,

combined with new, variable-flow rack and pinion steering, makes for precise

control on demanding roadways. The four-link rear suspension minimizes rear axle

hop and assures a smooth ride for back seat passengers.

The Limited grade comes standard with an X-REAS suspension system that further

improves performance, comfort and control. X-REAS automatically adjusts the

damping force of shocks when driving over bumpy surfaces, or when cornering. The

system uses a center control absorber to cross-link shocks on opposite corners

of the vehicle, substantially reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing

inputs. With X-REAS the new 4Runner corners flatter, smoother, and handles

choppy pavement more easily.

Every Safety Precaution Considered

On-road vehicle dynamics are further enhanced by a suite of high-performance,

state-of-the-art safety systems. Standard on 4Runner is Toyota's Star Safety

SystemTM, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC),

an Anti-Lock Brake System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and

Brake Assist. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps to ensure stability by

compensating for oversteer or understeer. The system uses selective braking and

modulated engine output to keep the vehicle in line with the driver's intended

course. On 4x2 vehicles, the Auto LSD (Limited Slip Differential) system allows

for better traction on slippery sections of roadway.

The four-wheel ABS with EBD provides the 4Runner anti-lock stopping control with

optimal brake proportioning, whether the vehicle is loaded or unloaded.

Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), standard on all 4x4 models and the 4x2 V6,

suppresses backward roll when switching from brake to accelerator. All 2010

4Runners have active headrests for driver and passenger, three-point seat belts

for all seats, an energy-absorbing body structure and an energy-absorbing hood

to help protect pedestrians.

A system of eight standard airbags includes front, side-mounted and knee airbags

for the driver and front passenger, and side curtain airbags for the second and

third row.

The 2010 4Runner now offers the new Safety ConnectTM telematics system.

Available by subscription, with or without the optional navigation system,

Safety Connect offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision

Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and

Roadside Assistance.

In case of either airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision Automatic

Collision Notification is designed to automatically call a response center. If a

response agent cannot communicate with the occupants, the agent can contact the

nearest emergency-services provider to dispatch assistance.

Pushing the in-vehicle "SOS" button allows drivers to reach the response center

to request help in an emergency as well as for a wide range of roadside

assistance needs. If a 4Runner equipped with Safety Connect is stolen, after a

police report is filed and the driver contacts the response center, agents can

work with local authorities to help locate and recover the vehicle.

Safety Connect is standard, factory-installed hardware on the 4Runner Limited

and available via an active subscription. An included one year trial

subscription will be offered on equipped new vehicle purchases.

A rear-view monitor system is standard on Limited and Trail grades and optional

on the SR5. The system displays in the rear-view mirror, helping to keep track

of hard-to-see objects to the rear of the vehicle. A rear clearance sonar system

is standard on SR5 models.

Everyday Convenience and Utility

The all-new 4Runner has been thoughtfully equipped with features and systems to

create a comfortable travel space, allowing for convenient operation in everyday

use.

The larger interior has been completely redesigned with comfort and utility in

mind. The front seats have a greater range of adjustment, both vertically and

front to rear.

A bright, highly visible dash houses speedometer, tachometer, voltage, fuel and

temp gauges, plus a combination meter that offers multiple functions. An

Eco-Driving feedback system allows the driver to manage fuel consumption in real

time. Within easy reach of the driver is an overhead console that organizes the

off-road control switches into one location. Features like a compass indicator

and outside temperature display add functionality in outdoor settings.

A manual climate control air conditioning system is standard on SR5 and Trail

grades. An automatic dual zone climate control air conditioning system is

standard on the Limited. The system features driver and passenger independent

temperature controls, providing separate comfort levels.

For second-row passengers, a newly sculpted front seat-back shape provides

additional knee space. A center armrest has been added, and the second-row seats

now individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps.

Third-row seating has been enhanced with a larger, more supportive seating area.

Access to the third row has been improved by splitting the second-row seats into

a 40/20/40 configuration and adopting a one-touch walk-in function.

A rich leather interior is standard on the Limited grade and optional on SR5.

The interior sports newly designed interior color schemes, using Black (Limited

only), and Sand Beige. Graphite and Sand Beige fabric is standard on SR5 and

Trail. Water-resistant fabric seats are standard equipment of Trail models.

Cargo-Carrying Versatility

The cargo area has been re-engineered to be more versatile than any SUV on the

market.

More cargo space is available due to the fold-flat second-row rear seats, which

do not require removal of the headrest for rearrangement. For models with three

rows of seats, the third row seats are split 50/50, and they readily fold flat

to allow the seatback to become the floor of the luggage compartment. They can

be folded from the side, or at the rear, using separate one-touch mechanisms.

With this new arrangement, more cargo space is available without removing seats,

and longer items can be conveniently stored.

A Smart Key System featuring keyless entry with push-button start is standard on

the Limited grade. The system allows the driver to unlock or start the vehicle

by carrying the keyless remote. The back door window has jam control, like the

moonroof and power side windows.

Another convenience feature is an available pull-out cargo deck that is capable

of carrying up to 440 pounds of weight. The cargo deck slides out to make

loading heavy items easier. When extended, the sturdy cargo deck can also be

used to provide seating, sheltered by the hatch, for tailgating and campsite

relaxation. For models with the sliding deck, a 6.4-liter capacity storage box

has been installed behind the rear seat, for handy storage of tools or other

items.

Audio with "Party Mode"

The SR5 base audio system has an AM/FM/CD player with eight speakers, providing

quality sound throughout the cabin and is XM® Satellite Radio capable with a

SDARS tuner.

Standard audio on the Trail grade and optional on SR5 is an AM/FM/MP3 CD player

with eight speakers, integrated XM Satellite Radio (includes 90-day trial

subscription), USB port with iPod connectivity, hands-free phone capability and

music streaming via Bluetooth® Wireless Technology, and steering wheel audio

controls.

The Premium JBL audio system has a six-disk in-dash CD changer and 15 speakers

for outstanding audio performance. For models equipped with the optional

navigation system, a four-disk CD changer is used, and XM Satellite Radio,

Bluetooth, and iPod with MP3 control functions are included, with 15-speaker JBL

audio. Reception has been enhanced on and off-road by adopting a fender-mounted,

pole-type antenna. The navigation system includes a large seven-inch monitor and

features an eco function that allows you to monitor fuel consumption per minute

in real time, and fuel consumption per interval.

A "party mode" setting raises the bass and transfers the equalization to the

rear of the vehicle to provide excellent outside audio for tailgating. Party

mode benefits from rear hatch-mounted speakers and is actuated by a switch,

installed in the instrument panel to the right of the driver's seat (rear hatch

speakers function with, or without, party mode).

"In 1984 the first 4Runner helped cultivate and foster the up-and-coming SUV

market, said Carter. "When the new 4Runner launches later this fall it will

continue to be a perfect fit for young, and young-at-heart, outdoor and off-road

enthusiasts."

BMW Lovos concept makes Chris Bangle look drab

It must be fun to be a car designer. Unless, of course, your name becomes synonymous with a specific styling trend that very few seem to appreciate... but we digress. It definitely seems that 24-year-old Pforzheim University graduate Anne Forschner had a good time coming up with her BMW Lovos concept, which can alternatively look either like a frightened porcupine or svelte salmon, depending on its needs at the time.

The exterior of the Lovos which somewhat ironically stands for Lifestyle of Voluntary Simplicity is theoretically constructed from just one fully exchangeable part that recurs 260 times. Each exterior piece is covered in solar photovoltaic cells and can hinge on a substructure underneath to follow the sun or act as individual airbrakes. We can only assume the concept would be powered by electricity, as it makes our hairs stand up on end.
